John Fowke Lancelot Rolleston was born on 26th March 1848, the eldest son of the Rev. William Lancelot Rolleston, vicar of Scaptoft and Gt. Dalby, Leicestershire and Mary Sophia, eldest daughter of Sir Frederick Gustavas Fowke, Bt.
Married firstly in 1874 to Catherine, daughter of Charles Adshead of Brighton, she died in 1891. The second marriage, in 1892, was to Eliza, daughter of Capt. George Morant, Farnborough Park, Hants. No mention has been found of issue, from either marriage.
He had two brothers and two sisters. Educated at Repton School and Kings College, London.
Was a Director of the Leicestershire Banking Co, President Surveyor's Institution, 1901., J.P. and D.L. for Leicestershire and Chairman of the Leicester Conservative Association. Was a member of the Grand Council of the Primrose League, 1896-97. Knighted 1897.
Sat as M.P. (Con) for Leicester from Oct. 1900 having been defeated therefore 1894 and 1895. Sat as M.P. (Con) for Hertford from 19th Jan. 1910, until on the list of Stewards of the Chiltern Hundreds 24th February 1916 (a notional 'office of profit under the crown' which is used to resign from the House of Commons).
