The Graphic (1869-1932)

The Graphic, begun as a weekly in 1869 in competition with the The Illustrated London News, sought to deal "picturesquely with all important events at Home and Abroad, thus forming an invaluable pictorial record." Founder William Luson Thomas was a liberal reformer and friend of Dickens, and hoped that illustrations would inspire a campaign against the evils of Victorian society, poverty and crime. Illustrators providing engravings, sketches, photos, watercolors included Randolph Caldecott, William Small, A.C. Corbould, A.B. Houghton, and Frank Craig. Writers included Rider Haggard, Bret Harte, S. Baring-Gould, Grant Allen, George Eliot, Tomas Hardy, W. M. Thackeray, and Anthony Trollope.
