The 1901 census shows a William H. Hope, aged 60, who was born in Croydon, Surrey. His occupation is recorded as a Landscape Painter and living in South Croydon. No other entry matches the name and place. The 1911 census gives his age as 77 and his year of birth as 1834. Recorded in the 1907 Kelly's Directory for Surrey is William Henry(sic) Hope, Artist, at the address shown on his diploma. Neither of the two habitations frequented by the Hope family, No.505 or No.1649, are recorded in this 1907 edition of Kelly's. The change of Street name on the diplomas, but keeping the same house name, would appear to be nothing more than the local authorities extending St. Peter's Road straight on. | |
